Meet Team Revolution, The Cyclists Who Have Raised $1.8 Million for Humber River Hospital Foundation
If you’re ever out driving on a Sunday, keep your eyes peeled for a pack of dedicated cyclists, raising money for healthcare in our community.
Team Revolution started with a dream to help revolutionize healthcare in our community by raising funds for Humber River Hospital Foundation. In 2011, sixty determined cyclists joined forces to conquer the hills of Italy’s Emilia-Romagna region in support of a dramatically different hospital. Months of intense training—through the extremes of our Canadian climate—paid off: On October 13, 2012, Team Revolution crossed the finish line of the Granfondo Italia victorious, raising $425,000 to help build North America’s most digital hospital.
Since then, the team has grown to over 100 riders and has raised $1.8 million for Humber River Hospital. Piazza Team Revolution, a space at Humber River Hospital that staff, patients, and families can all enjoy, was named in recognition of Team Revolution’s fundraising over the years.
Ron Sedran, who has been riding with Team Revolution since 2012, told us that his favourite things about being on the team have been: “The camaraderie, raising funds for Humber River Hospital Foundation, and healthy living!”
James Allison, who joined the Team in 2015, also spoke about the lifelong connections he has made through the team: “Cycling provides me with a sense of freedom, to be able to go out and explore new places, all while incorporating a good workout. And to do it with your best friends makes it that much more enjoyable.”
Team Revolution’s sights are now set on their next big challenge: they are heading back to Italy in September 2018 to complete the Granfondo Peschiera Del Garda. The team has also expanded its impact to include Humber River Hospital Foundation, Mackenzie Health Foundation, and Sunnybrook Hospital.
As new rider Charles Triassi told us, “The journey of any patient through our healthcare system can often be taxing both physically and emotionally. Anything we can do to facilitate this journey or lessen these burdens, in my opinion, is a cause I want to support.”
